Botanical Adulteration Prevention Program Takes Initiative to Develop
Industry-Accepted SOP to Appropriately Dispose of or Destroy Irreparably
Defective Botanical Ingredients
At
the Rocky Mountain Dietary Supplement Forum in Boulder, Colorado, Mark
Blumenthal revealed a new BAPP initiative that strives to get irreparably
defective botanical ingredients out of the supply chain.1 When
materials are rejected via appropriate quality control diligence, dietary
supplement manufacturers (and other buyers of botanical dietary ingredients) often
send the rejected materials back to the supplier in return for credit or a financial
refund of the order. While some of these materials can be reprocessed or
repurposed to be sold as materials of acceptable quality, other materials,
e.g., herbal extracts that have been illegally spiked with conventional drugs
or adulterated with food dyes, are deemed irreparably defective. The goal of
the initiative is to create a standard operating procedure (SOP) that leads to
the destruction of such irreparably defective material in order to prevent it
from re-entering commerce. The details of the proposed draft SOP are currently being
developed by a committee of experienced food and drug lawyers who are providing
legal consulting services in support of the initiative.
