67th International
Congress and Annual Meeting of the Society for Medicinal Plant and Natural
Product Research
Innsbruck, Austria: September 1st – 5th, 2019
The Annual Meeting of the Society for Medicinal Plant and
Natural Product Research (better known as the GA meeting) is the largest
conference uniting members of the international natural products research
community. The scientific program will cover a
large variety of topics in natural product research. Leading researchers from
the academia and industry will present their most recent scientific
advancements and will discuss exciting developments regarding the composition,
activity, and safety of natural products, including botanical raw materials and
herbal extracts.
This year’s meeting features a
pre-conference workshop entitled “Economic Adulteration of Botanical Ingredients:
What Do We Know, and How Can We Solve it?” which is held on September 1st, 2019
at the Centre for Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Innsbruck. BAPP is
represented at the workshop with talks by Mark Blumenthal, Founder and
Executive Director of the American Botanical Council, Roy Upton, Founder, Executive Director, and Editor of the American Herbal Pharmacopoeia, and Stefan Gafner, Chief
Science Officer of the American Botanical Council. Presentation topics will
include, among others, the issues with the 2019 reports on curcumin hepatotoxicity in Italy, analytical tools to
identify adulteration, and an assessment of commercial turmeric, St. John’s
wort, and ginkgo samples using HPTLC.

133th AOAC International Annual
Meeting and Exposition
Denver, CO: September 8th – 11th, 2019
The Annual meeting of AOAC International is an event is where the food
science analytical community comes together to share knowledge and forge
business-building collaborations. This year’s meeting features a
number of symposia that focus on botanical dietary supplement and food
adulteration. The symposia entitled “Applications of DNA Technologies and
Standards in the Authentication of Quality Control of Botanical Dietary Supplements,”
“Non-Targeted Testing for Food Authenticity: Ideas, Challenges, Requirements,”
“Food Fraud Detection Goes Mobile,” “How Can NGS Based Methods Advance Food
Safety and Quality Programs,” “New Tools for Food Fraud, an Old Problem with Perpetual
New Intricacy,” and “NMR Advancement in Quality Control and Compendial
Applications” should be of interest to those working in a botanical
ingredient/product quality control environment. A number of experts will
present on topics such as DNA-based authentication of botanicals, chemometric
methods to ensure ingredient identity, and the strengths and limitations of currently
available handheld devices to ensure food authenticity.
