Upcoming Events

Below are descriptions and links to some of the upcoming conferences, seminars, and workshops that may be of interest to learn more on adulteration.

USP Workshop on Chemical Contaminants in Foods—Risk-based Approaches to Protect Public Health

Rockville, MD: November 20-21, 2014

The focus of this event is on the contaminants present in food ingredients, including a more in-depth discussion on specific types of contaminants and their management within their supply chains. Speakers will review methods of analysis and techniques for detecting various contaminants of interest to the food industry. This workshop aims to bring stakeholders together to discuss non-regulated contaminants, supply chain evaluation, risk-based testing strategies, and more.

Topics:

-        Introduction on regulatory frameworks for contaminants

-        Non-regulated contaminants

-        Man-made: Heavy metals

-        Natural: Mycotoxins

-        Dioxins and dioxin-like compounds

-        Emerging materials

-        Supply chain evaluation for risks of contaminants

-        Risk prioritization

-        Risk-based testing strategies

-        Risk perception vs. risk communication

Practical Applications of NMR in Industry Conference

La Jolla, CA: February 9-12, 2015

This conference may not be on everyone’s agenda, but for those interested in the possibilities of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) as a tool for identification of dietary supplements, the afternoon session on February 9, devoted to food and agricultural commodities, may be of interest. Topics include, e.g., the authentication of Colombian coffee using 1H-NMR fingerprints (speaker: Julien Wist; Universidad del Valle; Cali, Colombia) and the analysis of olive oil using multinuclear NMR (speaker: Emmanuel Hatzakis; Pennsylvania State University; University Park, PA). On February 10, the presentation on the use of benchtop low-resolution NMR to detect and quantify adulterants in dietary supplements (speaker: Myriam Malet-Martino; Paul Sabatier University; Toulouse, France) will give an overview of the utility of these more affordable NMR instruments for the authentication of botanicals.
