UNPA Raw Materials Summit

Salt Lake City, UT: February 23rd-24th, 2016

This two-day summit will discuss current issues with the supply chain for dietary supplement management and related issues. The goals are to provide attendees with the information and resources needed to implement new systems and technologies and integrated quality practices leading to product integrity and competitive fairness, and an increase in competence and transparency of the dietary supplement supply chain. Topics are the following: Best practices for collection, handling, manufacturing and shipping; Implementation of the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) for dietary ingredient suppliers; GNC’s raw materials working group: an update; Adulteration case studies; Emerging track-and-trace technologies; and auditing and certification systems. The summit will feature speakers from leading dietary supplement manufacturers and ingredient suppliers.

16th Annual Oxford International Conference on the Science of Botanicals (ICSB)/5th Interim American Society of Pharmacognosy Meeting

Oxford, MS: April 11th-14th, 2016

The focus of the 16th Oxford ICSB/5th Interim ASP Meeting is to discuss approaches for postmarket surveillance, risk and safety assessment, quality control and adverse event reporting (AER) for botanical dietary supplements (BDSs) and natural products, as well as regulatory aspects with perspectives from government, manufacturers, and trade associations. To this end, the program will include relevant presentations from members of the Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition (CFSAN)/Food and Drug Administration (FDA), government officials, major trade associations, and industry representatives discussing pressing topics that affect BDSs and their impact on consumers.

Macroscopic and Organoleptic Assessment of Botanical Ingredients

Asheville, NC: June 2nd, 2016

This workshop will introduce participants to identifying and evaluating botanical raw materials using the senses. Organoleptic analyses evaluate the look, feel, aroma, taste, and fracture of botanical ingredients with a high degree of confidence for determining identity and quality. Participants will learn the basics of sensory perception, assessment of various forms and grades of botanical ingredients, proper documentation, and detection of adulteration, as well as how to utilize these techniques to comply with dietary supplement Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) per 21 CFR part 111.
