Name of Drug

Symphyti herba, comfrey herb.  
Symphyti folium, comfrey leaf.  

Composition of Drug

Comfrey herb consists of the fresh or dried above-ground parts of Symphytum officinale L.  [Fam.  Boraginaceae], as well as their preparations in effective dosage.  

Comfrey leaf consists of the fresh or dried leaf of S.  officinale L., as well as its preparations in effective dosage.  

The drug contains allantoin and rosmarinic acid.  

Uses

External:

  • Bruises, sprains.  

Contraindications

None known.  

Note:Application should only occur on intact skin.  During pregnancy use only after consultation with a physician.

None known.  

Interactions with Other Drugs

None known.  

Dosage

Unless otherwise prescribed:

  • Ointments and other preparations for external application with 5 - 20 percent dried drug;
  • equivalent preparations.  

The daily applied dosage should not exceed 100 mcg of pyrrolizidine alkaloids with 1,2-unsaturated necine structure, including their N-oxides.  

Mode of Administration

Comminuted herb and other galenical preparations for external use.  

Duration of Administration

Not more than 4 - 6 weeks per year.
