Mission
ABC provides education using science-based and traditional information to promote
the responsible use of herbal medicine — serving the public, healthcare
professionals, industry, regulators and media.
Who We Are
Mark Blumenthal, Founder and Executive Director
Mark is the founder and executive director of the American Botanical Council (ABC),
the editor/publisher of HerbalGram, and the senior editor of ABC’s
three books. He represents ABC in the media, to ABC stakeholders, and in dozens
of appearances at conventions, conferences, and other appearances. He has guided
ABC strategically since its founding.
Wayne Silverman, PhD, Chief Administrative Officer
Wayne is the chief administrative officer of ABC. He provides overall management
and administration, initiates new projects, negotiates contracts and coordinates
development functions. He works with Mark to represent ABC to stakeholders and
at conventions.
Sean Barnes, Art Director
As ABC’s art director, Sean is responsible for all design and production
aspects of HerbalGram, The ABC Clinical Guide to Herbs, advertising,
marketing and collateral materials, print catalog, trade show graphics, and website
graphics.
Kathleen Coyne, Sales Coordinator
Kathleen coordinates all aspects of educational product sales, including customer
service, purchasing, and shipping. She also assists with HerbClip production,
bulk mailings, maintenance, purchasing, and equipment.
Cheryl Dipper, Executive Assistant to Mark Blumenthal
As Mark’s assistant, Cheryl coordinates all aspects of his business trips
and schedule, maintains his calendar, transcribes his correspondence, and serves
as his liaison. In addition, she assists with special projects as needed.
Stacy Elliott, Receptionist
Stacy greets phone and in-person visitors to ABC, processes incoming mail, copy
edits HerbClip, and provides assistance to the finance and other departments as
needed.
Gayle Engels, Education Coordinator
Gayle coordinates ABC’s education efforts, including the internship program,
Safety Labeling Program, professional continuing education program, community
relations, volunteer acquisition, garden management, and gives educational presentations
on- and off-site.
Michael Finney, HerbalGram Managing Editor
Michael joined ABC as managing editor in March 2004. Karen Robin, the former managing
editor, left in January 2004.
Lori Glenn, HerbClip Coordinator
Lori is the managing editor of HerbClip and oversees all aspects of HerbClip editorial
development and production.
Tara Hall, Special Projects Coordinator
Tara currently is responsible for IT and website coordination, marketing coordination,
board of trustee relations, and special projects. Tara served as project manager
for the The ABC Clinical Guide to Herbs, The Complete Commission
E Monographs, and the Ginseng Evaluation Program.
George Solis, HerbClip Production Assistant
George is the HerbClip production assistant and assists in the gardens, facilities,
shipping, and maintenance.
Nathanael Sponseller, Gardener
Nathanael works in all areas of the garden, rainwater harvesting, landscaping,
and maintenance. Nathanael also works with garden volunteers.
Cecelia Thompson, Finance Coordinator
Cecelia coordinates the finance department and has worked at ABC since its founding.
She works with Mark and Wayne to provide financial strategic direction for ABC.
Kim West, Membership/Development Coordinator
Kim oversees membership and development and works closely with Wayne and Mark,
managing donor pledges, payments, solicitations, and acknowledgements. She also
works to ensure that members are receiving the full benefits of their ABC membership.
Margaret Wright, Accounting Coordinator
Margaret has worked at ABC since its founding. She manages accounts receivable,
HerbalGram classified advertising, and employee benefits.
