Community Responds to HerbalGram's 'Gutsy' Article on NCCIH Botanical Research PrioritiesIntegrator Blog features comments from 12 herbal experts
|
At
the end of September 2015, John Weeks, publisher-editor of The Integrator Blog,
asked his readers to comment on anHerbalGram article in issue 107 that
focused on botanical research conducted by the National Center for
Complementary and Integrative Medicine (NCCIH). The article detailed 16
studies, the results of which were mostly negative.
As Weeks explains:"So when the American
Botanical Council (ABC) chose to publish a significant perspective from NCCIH's
botanicals chief, Craig Hopp, PhD, the time seemed a good time to seek
community perspectives. Hopp's article, 'Past and Future Research at National
Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) with Respect to
Botanicals' included a chart showing that 15 of 16 NIH-funded trials on
botanicals for significant conditions failed to show value. Wasn't this, if
gutsy on ABC's part, an odd choice for an organization with strong backing if
its initiatives from most of the herb industry.
