By making a cash gift before December 31st, you can take advantage of the expanded tax benefits offered through new legislation. To encourage charitable giving in the wake of the tragic events of this year, the House and Senate unanimously passed the Hurricane Katrina relief bill, and it was signed into law in September. The law is designed to give incentive to make additional gifts to disaster relief as well as to organizations who face increased fundraising challenges this year due to the overwhelming needs of the hurricane victims. The new law allows you to claim tax exemptions for up to 100% of your adjusted gross income on cash gifts made between August 28, 2005 and December 31, 2005.
