FWD 2 HerbalEGram:

HerbalEGram: Volume 3

Dear Friends of ABC:

On behalf of the Board of Trustees and Staff of the American Botanical Council, we want to thank you for your continued support of our nonprofit educational programs during the past year. We also want to share with you some of the successes you have made possible, and ask for your continued support.

Thanks to your generosity and the hard work of our dedicated staff and our volunteers on the Board of Trustees and the Advisory Board, ABC has been able to publish more of the reliable information you expect from us, more frequently, in a variety of print, online and electronic formats. We have been able to do this through sound financial management, and ended our current fiscal year over budget.

  • HerbalGram, our quarterly journal, continues to provide high quality, peer-reviewed articles on clinical, scientific and traditional aspects of herbs. Recent feature articles on Tibetan herbal medicine, Ayurvedic formulations and efforts to maintain sustainability of Indian medicinal plants, and the medicinal plants of Montenegro reflect not only our readers' interests in the many long-standing cultural traditions on medicinal plants but also the increasingly international scope of ABC's work.. In addition, the recent issue features an extensive article on the scientific evidence supporting some botanists' proposal for a possible reclassification of the genus Echinacea, an issue that will surely continue to be discussed for several years hence.
  • HerbalEGram, ABC's monthly electronic journal, brings you dozens of original articles and news updates on a wide variety of topics in between issues of HerbalGram. Our new Media Watch feature keeps you connected with recent media coverage about herbs and the herbal community.
  • HerbClipTM now offers 14 summaries and critical reviews twice each month, available in a searchable database of over 3000 HerbClips -- online through certain levels of ABC Membership.
  • ABC's newest book, The Identification of Medicinal Plants: A Handbook of the Morphology of Botanicals in Commerce, was released in October, and it promises to be an indispensable guide for many parts of the herbal industry to help ensure correct identification of the botanical ingredients used in supplements and other herbal preparations.
  • ABC worked closely with and cooperated with four other herbal organizations to launch the first HerbDay, an international grassroots campaign designed to raise public awareness about the significance of herbs in our lives and the many ways herbs can be used safely and creatively for health, beauty care, and culinary enjoyment.
  • Our year-round internship program educates future pharmacists and dietitians, helping them understand the vital role that herbs and medicinal plants play in selfcare and healthcare and how they can incorporate them into their future professional practice.
  •  ABC welcomed a new member to our Board of Trustees and several new members to our Advisory Board. Their dedication of time and talent are wonderful assets to ABC and will help ensure we continue to fulfill our nonprofit educational mission and realize our shared vision of a world where people make educated, responsible choices about herbal medicine as an accepted part of healthcare and selfcare.

Space does not permit us to list all the projects, programs and activities in which ABC has engaged in the past year. In addition to all these projects and programs, we are planning new projects and benefits for 2007!

Again, we are deeply grateful to your valuable support through your Membership in ABC, and we are energized by the work we have been able to do together. It has been an exciting year of growth and opportunity for ABC, and we are looking forward to more exciting opportunities in 2007.  As we look forward, we are counting on your continued support to help us maintain the successes of this past year.

At this holiday season, we ask you to help us keep the up our strong momentum by considering additional support through any of the following possibilities:

1. Making a fully tax-deductible, one-time donation to ABC;
2. Giving a gift membership, which includes a subscription to HerbalGram and HerbalEGram, to a friend or colleague;
3. Shopping online at ABC's Herbal Education Catalog, and taking advantage of your Member discount on our selection of classic and timely books and monographs.

Again, a big and sincere thank you from all of us at ABC for your support of our educational efforts.

Cordially,
