ABC Founder and Executive Director Mark Blumenthal will be the special guest speaker at Aboca’s Third Professional Course, May 7-13, 2006 in Sansepolcro, Italy. Blumenthal will be presenting a lecture on regulatory issues in the United States, as well as an update on herb-drug interactions. Other speakers include Robin DiPasquale, ND, Botanical Medicine Department Chair of Bastyr University; David Wood, BSc, ND, President and co-founder of Trinity Family Health Clinic, Lynnwood, WA; and Andrea Lugli, BSc, CPP, Scientific Director of Planta Medica.

The planned lectures include:

• Field Study of Organically Grown Medicinal Herbs (Robin DiPasquale, Lecturer)
• History and Contemporary History of Herbal Medicine in Europe (Andrea Lugli, Lecturer)
• Regulatory Review of Herbal Dietary Supplements in the U.S.: Issues of Quality, Safety and Efficacy (Mark Blumenthal, Lecturer)
• Cardiovascular Disease, Prevention and Treatment (Robin DiPasquale, Lecturer)
• Herb-Drug Interactions: A Review of the Potential Safety Issues Related to the Increasingly Widespread Use of Herbs (Mark Blumenthal, Lecturer)
• Restoring the Whole Person Through Nutritional and Botanical Detoxification: A Clinical Perspective (David Wood, Lecturer)

This seven-day, six-night tour combines three days of academic lectures with the beauty of surrounding countryside. Available tours of the Renaissance towns of Pienxa and Bagno Vignoni, as well as an excursion to Florence, promise to both relax and inspire. Pienza is the home of Pope Pius II and is considered by some to be a classic utopian city of its time, while Bagno Vignoni is well known for its thermal baths. May 11 is scheduled as a full day in the city of Florence, where there will be an opportunity to spend the day with a guide-led group in the morning and explore museums and other points of personal interest in the afternoon.

The fee includes course materials, lectures, lodging, breakfast and other select meals. Also included are access to the Aboca Museum (see article in HerbalGram 65 http://www.herbalgram.org/herbalgram/articleview.asp?a=2795), guided excursions and ground transportation. Further details will be available by the end of February.
