NIH Soliciting Grant Applications for Research into Venous Thrombosis and Thromboembolism in the Elderly

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) posted 2 new Requests for Applications (RFAs) to its Guide for Grants on November 3, soliciting Research Project and Exploratory/Developmental grant applications from investigators interested in exploring the problem of venous thrombosis (VT, formation of a blood clot in a vein) and thromboembolism (VTE, formation of a clot in a blood vessel that breaks loose and is carried by the blood stream to plug another vessel) in the elderly.1,2 All applications must be received by January 9, 2007.

The 2 RFAs run parallel and are identical in scope, one operating under an R21 grant mechanism and the other utilizing an R01 grant mechanism. The purpose of these RFAs are to encourage research that might generate improved understanding of the factors that contribute to the age-related increased risk of VT and VTE and lead to improvements in their diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

The NIH organizations co-sponsoring these RFAs are the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), the National Institute on Aging (NIA), and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI). According to Becky Costello, PhD, ODS director of grants and extramural activities, the ODS would be particularly interested in research that might identify commonly prescribed drugs and over-the-counter medications that modulate risk of VT/VTE or the effects of antithrombotic therapy, as well as research that would explore the role of dietary factors or dietary supplements in modifying the risk and clinical course of VT/VTE and influence its management (e-mail to M. Blumenthal, Nov. 3, 2006).

The total amount to be awarded for the 2 RFAs is $3.3 million for total costs (approximately $2 million direct costs). NIH anticipates distributing awards to a total of 5 to 8 applicants for the 2 RFAs.1,2 The size and duration of awards will vary, depending on the quality, duration, and costs of the proposed projects.
