The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published an advance notice of proposed rulemaking in the Federal Register
in November to request public comments about possible changes to the
Nutrition Facts and Supplement Facts labels of food products and
dietary supplements.1 The agency has asked for comments on
what new reference values the agency should use to calculate the
percent daily value of items listed on such labeling, what factors the
agency should consider in establishing such values, and whether it
should require that certain nutrients be added or removed from such
labeling.
The deadline for submitting comments is January 31, 2008. More
information about the current Nutrition Facts and Supplement Facts
labeling guidelines and practices, as well as instructions on how to
submit comments to the FDA, is available in the Federal Register posting, available here.
