ABC Mourns the Passing of Fredi Kronenberg

The information below is from an ABC Member Advisory from ABC Founder & Executive Director Mark Blumenthal this morning.

Friday, April 21, 2017

It is with deep sadness and respect that I share with you the news of the passing of Fredi Kronenberg, PhD, during the night of Wednesday/Thursday. She had been experiencing a lengthy illness.

Fredi was a pioneer in the area of botanical research in women’s health. In 1993, she co-founded and served as the first and only director of the Richard and Hinda Rosenthal Center for Complementary & Alternative Medicine at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City, the first broad-based complementary and alternative medicine program at a major medical center in the United States. She was also a co-founder of an annual nutrition course for physicians with the Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona. In recent years she had also been affiliated with research programs at Stanford University, where she earned her doctorate in physiology, and The New York Botanical Garden.

She established the first week-long Continuing Medical Education Course on botanical medicine for physicians and other health care providers, held at Columbia and The New York Botanical Garden, an annual educational program that lasted 10 years.

Fredi had been a long-standing and active member of the Board of Trustees of the American Botanical Council for 18 years, since 1999 until her death. During this entire time she was an outspoken and positive influence on the direction and role of ABC. She introduced ABC to many prominent leaders in the CAM community, many of whom have participated in ABC’s nonprofit research and educational mission, publications, and programs.

A 2010 HerbalGram profile of Dr. Kronenberg can be found here on the ABC website.

The entire staff and Board of Trustees of ABC send profound and heartfelt condolences to Fredi’s family and her many friends and collaborators.
