Name of Drug

Boldo folium, boldo leaf.  

Composition of Drug

Boldo leaf consists of the dried leaves of Peumus boldus Molina [Fam.  Monimiaceae], as well as its preparations in effective dosage.  

The leaves contain at least 0.1 percent alkaloids, calculated as boldine, and flavonoids.  

Uses

Mild spastic complaints of the gastrointestinal tract, dyspepsia.  

Contraindications

Obstruction of bile ducts, severe liver diseases.  In case of gallstones, to be used only after consultation with a physician.  

Side Effects

None known.  

Interactions with Other Drugs

None known.  

Dosage

Unless otherwise prescribed:

Average daily dosage:

  • 3 g of herb;
  • equivalent preparations.  

Mode of Administration

Comminuted herb for infusions and other, virtually ascaridol-free preparations for internal application.  

Note:Because of the ascaridol content, essential oil and distillates of boldo leaf should not be used.
