Name of Drug

Centaurii herba, centaury herb.  

Composition of Drug

Centaury consists of the dried, above-ground parts of Centaurium minus Moench (syn.   C.  umbellatum Gilbert; Erythraea centaurium (L.) Persoon) [Fam.  Gentianaceae], as well as their preparations in effective dosage.  

The drug has a bitter value of minimum 2000.  

Uses

Loss of appetite, peptic discomfort.

Dosage

Unless otherwise prescribed:

Average daily dosage:

  • 6 g of drug;
  • equivalent preparations.  

Extract (according to Erg.  B.  6 ):
Daily dosage:

  • 1 - 2 g.  

Mode of Administration

Ground herb for teas and other bitter-tasting preparations for internal use.
