Name of Drug

Foenugraeci semen, fenugreek.  

Composition of Drug

Fenugreek consists of the ripe, dried seed of Trigonella foenum-graecum L.  [Fam.  Fabaceae], as well as its preparations in effective dosage.  

The drug contains mucilage and bitter principles.  

Uses

Internal:

  • Loss of appetite.  

External:

  • As poultice for local inflammation.  

Contraindications

None known.  

Side Effects

Repeated external applications can result in undesirable skin reactions.  

Interactions with Other Drugs

None known.  

Dosage

Unless otherwise prescribed:

Internal:

  • 6 g drug; equivalent preparations.  

External:

  • 50 g powdered drug with liter water.  

Mode of Administration

Liniments in the form of alcoholic solutions, ointments, gels, emulsions, oils.  Also bath additive and as an inhalant.
