Name of Drug

Piceae aetheroleum, fir needle oil, white spruce oil.  

Composition of Drug

Fir needle oil is a volatile oil obtained from tips of branches or twigs of Picea abie s (L.) Karsten (synonyms: P. excelsa (Lamarck) Link), Abies alba Miller, A. sachalinensis (Fr.  Schmidt) Masters, or A.  sibirica Ledebour [Fam.  Pinaceae], as well as essential oil preparations thereof in effective dosage.  

Uses

External and internal:

  • For catarrhal illness of the upper and lower respiratory tract.  

External:

  • For rheumatic and neuralgic pains.  

Contraindications

Bronchial asthma, whooping cough.  

Side Effects

Increased irritation to the skin and mucous membranes can occur.  

Bronchospasms can be increased.  

Interactions with Other Drugs

None known.  

Dosage

Unless otherwise prescribed:

  • Dosage is individualized according to the type and intensity of the illness, any special areas of use, as well as the mode of administration.  

Mode of Administration

Liniments in the form of alcoholic solutions, ointments, gels, emulsions, oils.  Also bath additive and as an inhalant.
