Name of Drug

Grindeliae herba, gumweed herb.  

Composition of Drug

Gumweed herb consists of the dried tops and leaves of Grindelia robusta Nutt.  and/or G.  squarrosa (Pursh) Dunal [Fam.  Asteraceae], gathered during flowering season, as well as their preparations in effective dosage.  

The drug contains essential oil.  

Uses

Catarrhs of the upper respiratory tract.  

Contraindications

None known.  

Side Effects

In rare cases irritation of the gastric mucosa.  

Interactions with Other Drugs

None known.  

Dosage

Unless otherwise prescribed:

Daily dosage:

  • 4 - 6 g of drug or 3 - 6 g gumweed fluidextract ( Erg.  B.  6 );
  • tincture (1:10 or 1:5.  ethanol 60 percent - 80 percent [v/v]), 1.5 - 3 ml;
  • equivalent preparations.  

Mode of Administration

Comminuted herb for teas and other galenical preparations for internal use.
