Name of Drug

Terebinthina laricina, larch turpentine.  
Terebinthina veneta, Venetian turpentine.  

Composition of Drug

The balsam of Larix decidua Miller [Fam.  Pinaceae], obtained by drilling into the trunks.  

The balsam contains up to 20 percent essential oil.  

Uses

Rheumatic and neuralgic discomforts, catarrhal diseases of the respiratory tract, furuncle.  

Contraindications

Sensitivity to essential oils.  

For inhalation:

  • acute inflammation of the respiratory tract.  

Side Effects

Topical application can cause allergic skin reactions, as has been observed with all balsams.  

Interactions with Other Drugs

None known.  

Dosage

External:

  • Liquid and semi-solid preparations 10 - 20 percent.  

Mode of Administration

Embrocations in the form of ointments, gels, emulsions and oils.
