Name of Drug

Podophylli peltati rhizoma, mayapple root, American mandrake.  
Podophylli peltati resina, mayapple resin, American mandrake resin.  

Composition of Drug

Mayapple root consists of the dried rhizome and connected roots of Podophyllum peltatum L.  [Fam.  Berberidaceae].  

The root contains at least 4 percent resin with podophyllotoxin.  Mayapple resin consists of the resin of the dried and stored (aged) rhizome of P.  peltatum L., as well as its preparations in effective dosage.  

Uses

External:

  • Removal of pointed condyloma.  

Contraindications

Pregnancy.

None known.  

Interactions with Other Drugs

None known.  

Dosage

Daily dosage:

  • 1.5 - 3 g root;
  • 1.5 - 3 g fluidextract ( Erg.  B.  6 );
  • 2.5 - 7.5 g tincture ( Erg.  B.  6 );
  • equivalent preparations.  

Mode of Administration

Dried rhizome for production of resin exclusively for external application.  

Note:The treated skin surface must not be larger than 25 cm2[approx.  10 in.  x 10 in.].  Be sure to protect skin adjacent to treated area.
