Name of Drug

Niauli aetheroleum, niauli oil.  

Composition of Drug

Niauli oil consists of the essential oil from the leaves of Melaleuca viridiflora Solander ex Gaertner [Fam.  Myrtaceae], obtained by water distillation, as well as its preparations in effective dosage.  

The drug contains 35 - 60 percent cineol.

In vitro antibacterial, stimulatory to circulation.  

Clinical Data

Uses

Catarrhs of the upper respiratory tract.  

Contraindications

Internal:

  • Inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and gall ducts, severe liver disease.  

External:

  • Preparations containing niauli oil should not be used in the facial areas, particularly the nose, of infants and toddlers.  

Side Effects

In rare cases, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea can occur with internal use.  

Interactions with Other Drugs

Niauli oil contains 35 - 60 percent cineol.  Cineol causes the induction of the enzymes involved in the detoxification of the liver.  The effect of other drugs can, therefore, be reduced and/or shortened.  

Dosage

Unless otherwise prescribed:

Internal:

  • Single dose 0.2 g;
  • Daily dosage 0.2 - 2 g;
  • Oily nose drops:
  • 2 - 5 percent in vegetable oil.  

External:

  • Preparations in oil 10 - 30 percent.
