Name of Drug
Niauli aetheroleum, niauli oil.
Composition of Drug
Niauli oil consists of the essential oil from the leaves of Melaleuca viridiflora Solander ex Gaertner [Fam. Myrtaceae], obtained by water distillation, as well as its preparations in effective dosage.
The drug contains 35 - 60 percent cineol.

In vitro antibacterial, stimulatory to circulation.

Uses

|
Catarrhs of the upper respiratory tract.
Contraindications
|
|
Internal:
- Inflammatory diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and gall ducts, severe liver disease.
External:
- Preparations containing niauli oil should not be used in the facial areas, particularly the nose, of infants and toddlers.
Side Effects

|
In rare cases, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea can occur with internal use.
Interactions with Other Drugs
Niauli oil contains 35 - 60 percent cineol. Cineol causes the induction of the enzymes involved in the detoxification of the liver. The effect of other drugs can, therefore, be reduced and/or shortened.
Dosage
Unless otherwise prescribed:
Internal:
- Single dose 0.2 g;
- Daily dosage 0.2 - 2 g;
- Oily nose drops:
- 2 - 5 percent in vegetable oil.
External:
- Preparations in oil 10 - 30 percent.
