Name of Drug

Pini aetheroleum, pine needle oil.  

Composition of Drug

The essential oil obtained from fresh needles, tips of the boughs or fresh boughs with needles and tips of Pinus sylvestris L., P.  mugo ssp.   pumilio (Haenke) Franco, P.  nigra Arnold or P.  pinaster Soland [Fam.  Pinaceae], as well as their preparations in effective dosage.  

Uses

External and internal:

  • For catarrhal diseases of the upper and lower respiratory tract.  

External:

  • for rheumatic and neuralgic ailments.  

Contraindications

Bronchial asthma, whooping cough.  

Side Effects

Intensified irritation may occur on skin and mucous membranes.  Bronchospasms may be reinforced.  

Interactions with Other Drugs

None known.  

Dosage

For inhalation:

  • Several drops into hot water, the vapors to be inhaled.  

External application:

  • Several drops to be rubbed onto the affected area, in liquid and semi-solid preparations in concentrations of 10 - 50 percent.  

Mode of Administration

Ointment in the forms of alcoholic solutions, ointments, gels, emulsions, and oils.  As inhalant.
