Name of Drug

Primulae flos, primrose flower.  [This herb is not evening primrose, Oenothera biennis .]

Composition of Drug

Primrose flower consists of the dried, whole flowers with calyx of Primula veris L.  and/or P.  elatior (L.) Hill [Fam.  Primulaceae], as well as its preparations in effective dosage.  

The calyces contain saponins.  

Uses

Catarrhs of the respiratory tract.  

Contraindications

Known allergies to primrose.  

Side Effects

Gastric discomforts and nausea can occasionally occur.  

Interactions with Other Drugs

None known.  

Dosage

Daily dosage:

  • 2 - 4 g of drug;
  • 2.5 - 7.5 g of tincture (according to Erg.  B.  6 );
  • equivalent preparations.  

Mode of Administration

Comminuted herb for teas and other galenical preparations for internal use.
