Name of Drug

Primulae radix , primrose root, cowslip root.  [This herb is not evening primrose, Oenothera biennis .]

Composition of Drug

Primrose root consists of the dried rhizome with roots of Primula veris L.  and/or P.  elatior (L.) Hill [Fam.  Primulaceae], as well as its preparations in effective dosage.  

The drug contains saponins.  

Uses

Catarrhs of the respiratory tract.  

Contraindications

None known.  

Side Effects

Stomach upsets and nausea can occasionally occur.  

Interactions with Other Drugs

None known.  

Dosage

Daily dosage:

  • 0.5 - 1.5 g of drug;
  • 1.5 - 3 g of tincture (according to the Austrian Pharmacopoeia 9);
  • equivalent preparations.  

Mode of Administration

Comminuted drug for teas and cold macerations, as well as other galenical preparations for internal use.
