Name of Drug

Ratanhiae radix, rhatany root.  

Composition of Drug

Rhatany root consists of the dried root of Krameria triandra Ruz et Pavn [Fam.  Krameriacaceae], as well as its preparations in effective dosage.  

The drug contains at least 10 percent tannins.  

Uses

Topical treatment of mild inflammations of the oral and pharyngeal mucosa.  

Contraindications

None known.  

Side Effects

In very rare cases, allergic reactions of the mucous membranes may occur.  

Interactions with Other Drugs

None known.  

Dosage

Unless otherwise prescribed:

  • About 1 g comminuted drug in 1 cup of water as a decoction or 5 - 10 drops of rhatany tincture in 1 glass of water, 2 - 3 times daily;
  • Undiluted rhatany tincture painted on the affected surface 2 - 3 times daily;
  • equivalent preparations.  

Mode of Administration

Comminuted herb for decoctions and other galenical preparations for topical application.  

Duration of Administration

Without medical advice, not longer than 2 weeks.
