Name of Drug

Cytisi scoparii flos, Scotch broom flower.

Composition of Drug

Scotch Broom flower consists of the blossoms of Cytisus scoparius (L.) Link (syn.   Sarothamnus scoparius (L.) Wimm.  ex W.D.J.  Koch), as well as preparations thereof.

Pharmacological Properties, Pharmacokinetics, Toxicology

The drug can contain more than 2 percent tyramine.  It contains small amounts of alkaloids; the main alkaloid is sparteine.  Tyramine acts indirectly as a sympathomimetic drug, a vasoconstrictive and hypertensive effect.  Sparteine has a negative inotropic and negative chronotropic effect.  Because of the very small sparteine concentration, certain effects cannot be expected upon administration of the herb.
