Name of Drug

Polygalae radix, senega snakeroot.  

Composition of Drug

Senega snakeroot consists of the dried root with remains of aerial stems of Polygala senega L.  and/or other closely related species or a mixture of Polygala species [Fam.  Polygalaceae], as well as its preparations in effective dosage.  

The roots contain saponins.  

Uses

Catarrhs of the respiratory tract.  

Contraindications

None known.  

Side Effects

With prolonged use, gastrointestinal irritation.  

Interactions with Other Drugs

None known.  

Dosage

Daily dosage:

  • 1.5 - 3 g root;
  • 1.5 - 3 g fluidextract (following Erg.  B.  6 );
  • 2.5 - 7.5 g tincture (following Erg.  B.  6 );
  • equivalent preparations.  

Mode of Administration

Comminuted root for decoctions and other galenical preparations for internal use.
