Name of Drug

Saponariae rubrae radix, red soapwort root.  

Composition of Drug

Red soapwort root consists of the dried root, rhizome, and runner of Saponaria officinalis L.  [Fam.  Caryophyllaceae], as well as its preparations in effective dosage.  The root contains saponins.  

Uses

Catarrhs of the upper respiratory tract.  

Contraindications

None known.  

Side Effects

In rare cases, stomach irritation.  

Interactions with Other Drugs

None known.  

Dosage

Unless otherwise prescribed:

Daily dosage:

  • 1.5 g root or equivalent preparations.  

Mode of Administration

Comminuted herb for teas and other galenical preparations for internal use.  

Actions

Expectorant by irritation of the gastric mucosa
Cytotoxic, in high concentrations
