Some of the Commission E monographs cite drug standards in the German Pharmacopoeia ( Deutsches Arzneibuch ), the Swiss Pharmacopoeia ( Pharmacopoea Helvetica ), or the Austrian Pharmacopoeia ( Osterreichisches Arzneibuch ). When a reference to such a compendium is made, the Commission is citing that pharmacopeia as the standard for identity and purity of the drug material for which Commission E is providing therapeutic guidance. For example, in the Commission E monograph for Condurango bark the Dosage section refers to the sixth edition of the Swiss Pharmacopoeia ( Pharmacopoea Helvetica VI ) in citing the standard for the liquid extract; water extract, hydroalcoholic extract, and tincture are all referenced to the Erg. B 6 . ( Ergänzungsbuch zum Deutsche Arzneibuch, Sechste Ansgabe , Supplement to the German Pharmacopoeia , Sixth Edition ). The Erg. B 6 contains many additional herbal monographs (Schilcher, 1997b).
